Modelling of combined heat and power plants using EBSILON®Professional
2 March 2026 – 3 March 2026
2 March 2026 – 3 March 2026
8 hours
8.30 am – 1.00 pm
€600.00
The course focuses on the modelling of steam turbine power plants with heat extraction. Users are gradually familiarised with the structure of a steam turbine power plant, with the technical background of the individual design steps being explained (specific features of design calculations and part-load behaviour). The aim of this training is to familiarise users with the technical concepts and specific features of heat extraction from a back-pressure and extraction condensing turbine. Control concepts for maintaining district heating output and flow temperature are presented. The calculations of key performance indicators (efficiency, power ratio and power loss ratio) are discussed. Finally, special Ebsilon components for modelling combined heat and power plants are covered
Modelling of solar power plants using EBSILON®Professional
9 March 2026 – 10 March 2026
9 March 2026 – 10 March 2026
8 hours
8.30 am – 1.00 pm

The course focuses on the modelling of solar power plants using parabolic trough technology. Users are introduced step-by-step to the modelling of a parabolic trough power plant, with the technical background of each construction stage being explained. The aim of this training is to familiarise users with the technical concepts and specific features of solar heat and power generation, taking meteorological boundary conditions into account. Users will be introduced to time series analysis and the modelling of thermal storage systems.

Following an introduction to the relevant Ebsilon pipe types and the available equations of state, a model of a single-stage heat pump is constructed. First, the design conditions (in particular the temperatures of the heat source and sink and the heat load) are defined. Once the design calculations have been completed, the useful heat and the COP value of the heat pump are calculated. Subsequently, improvements to the heat pump configuration (e.g. superheating of the evaporated working fluid and subcooling of the condensed working fluid) are investigated and plotted on a Ts diagram. Part-load conditions (varying heat loads and temperatures of the heat source and sink) are then investigated. The influence of different working fluids on the simulation results (in particular the COP value) is also examined. Finally, a model of a two-stage heat pump is created and the results are examined.

The course begins with an introduction to programming using the ‘EbsScript’ programming language itself. To this end, the syntax and function library of EbsScript are covered, and simple EbsScripts are created to access the objects of a model and to run the model simulation. In addition, the creation of user-defined ‘macros’, which combine the functionality of existing Ebsilon components, is covered. With the help of “kernel scripting”, user-defined components can be programmed, although this requires the physics of the components to be programmed in full. Simple examples are used to introduce the programming of such kernel scripts. The EbsOpen interface, which is also part of the EbsScript licence, allows the Ebsilon application to be launched from another programming environment and a simulation to be performed. A simple application is created in Microsoft Visual Basic (or in Matlab or Python if participants wish), which launches Ebsilon and runs a simulation. The Excel add-in supplied with Ebsilon is also based on the EbsOpen interface, and a simple example is created in Excel to exchange data with Ebsilon and simulate a model.
